Rosacea is a chronic progressive skin disorder which is characterized by extreme sensitivity, inflammation and redness (leaky vessels), rapid loss of collagen and elastin, increased visibility of blood vessels, swollen and painful or acneic skin. The skin becomes hyper-responsive and sensitive to external and internal stimulus such as alcohol, UV exposure, artificial cosmetics, heat and extreme temperature changes.
The exact cause of Rosacea is unknown. Exposure to certain climates, radiation (including UV radiation) resulting in vessel wall abnormalities may play a role in the development of the disease. Previously, it was believed that Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers, was involved, however more recent studies show that it may be caused by a mite called Demodex folliculorum. Diet and digestive issues have shown to be a contributing factor in the development of Rosacea.
The treatment strategy for Rosacea includes repairing the skin barrier, calming inflammation, rebuilding the dermis, restoring antioxidants, increasing circulation and repairing broken capillaries.
